Project Based Learning
PBL is an important attribute in my classroom, as it includes meaningful themes, creative forms of assessment and involves community resources and involvement. Teaching in the heart of Detroit has given me numerous resources and fresh ideas, which I have brought into the classroom. For instance, students took part in a Black History Month project based assignment, where they had the opportunity to use available resources to create a diorama about an influential African Americans, and dressed up in costume. This creative and interactive project brought about culture and a sense of community in the classroom, while the parents took part in a Black History month tour. This assignment was a great example of how teachers, students and parents can collaboratively work together to exemplify community and culture. While aware of the assignment requirements, the students absorbed and relished the rich learning experience rather than focused on the assignment grading.

Student Lead Teaching
Additionally, another innovative concept I brought into the classroom is through student lead teaching. Although this strategy may have some challenges, it has great benefits to students’ learning. I applied this practice into my reading and writing classes, where students lead the daily vocabulary and sentence structure review. By having a student lead instructional portions, this empowers him/her to learn the content being taught. Students are able to identify when their peer (student lead) may need to add more detail and/or change their sentence structure. Through assessment and observation, I saw student development in their writing and reading skills. Assuming a teacher’s persona creates new light into learning and allow students to engage in a leadership role in the classroom.
